Reading the yield curve

The yield curve plots interest rates by maturity. Its shape is one of the few market signals with a long, well-documented track record — and it is refreshed every business day on our rates and FX page.

Normal, flat and inverted

Normally you demand more for lending longer, so the curve slopes up. A flattening curve says markets expect cuts, usually because the economy is cooling.

An inverted curve puts short rates above long rates. Historically one of the more reliable leading recession signals, with a lag of six to eighteen months — too long to trade on.

The common measure is the 2s10s spread: ten-year minus two-year, in basis points. One basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

  • Upward curve: normal, growth expected
  • Flat curve: doubt about the rate path
  • Inverted curve: recession signal with a long lag

Country spreads in the euro area

All euro countries borrow in the same currency but not at the same rate. The gap versus Germany prices credit risk and political uncertainty.

A fast widening spread is rarely about one country alone: it feeds into bank funding costs across the region and therefore into lending.

For retail investors the spread is a thermometer; for policymakers it is an alarm, and the ECB has tools aimed specifically at unwarranted widening.

Why crypto moves along

Bitcoin and growth equities derive value from cash flows far in the future. The higher the risk-free rate, the less that future is worth today — arithmetic, not sentiment.

There is also the alternative: with short rates at several percent, investors can earn risk-free. That raises the bar for every risky position.

Practical rule: falling rates are rarely instantly good news — they usually fall because something is breaking — but a steady decline without recession has historically been the best climate for risk assets.

Najczęstsze pytania

What is a basis point?

One hundredth of a percentage point. A move from 3.00% to 3.25% is 25 basis points.

Does an inverted curve always predict recession?

Not always, and never with usable timing. It is a risk signal, not a calendar.

Why is the country yield a monthly figure?

That series follows the ECB convergence criterion, published monthly. The curve above it is daily.
