Spot crypto scams before you pay

Crypto fraud is rarely creative. Almost every case follows a handful of patterns you can learn to recognise.

Pattern 1: guaranteed returns

Any promise of a fixed, guaranteed return in crypto is a red flag. Real yield is variable; a fixed percentage means someone else carries the risk, and usually that there is no yield at all.

Watch for phrases like 'backed by our reserves', 'risk-free arbitrage algorithm' or 'one percent daily'.

Pattern 2: urgency and exclusivity

Fraudsters shorten your thinking time. 'Today only', 'three spots left', 'bonus expires at midnight' are techniques, not marketing.

With a real investment you can always wait a week.

Pattern 3: the fake platform with pretty numbers

You get a dashboard where your deposit grows nicely. Small withdrawals work, large ones do not; then a 'tax advance' or 'unlock fee' appears.

Any request to pay in order to withdraw your own money is fraud by definition.

  • Never scale up because a small withdrawal worked
  • Never pay to withdraw
  • Check the licence with your national regulator

Patterns 4 to 7

Pattern 4 is false identity: a cloned website or an 'employee' of a real bank. Pattern 5 is the romance or friendship setup.

Pattern 6 is the giveaway: send crypto, get double back. Pattern 7 is recovery fraud, targeting earlier victims.

The two-minute check

Look the party up in the regulator's register, search the company name together with 'scam' or 'review', and check the domain registration date.

If one of the three fails, stop. A missed opportunity costs nothing; a wrong transfer costs everything.

Najczęstsze pytania

What is the most common crypto fraud?

The fake investment platform with a growing dashboard, combined with trust built over chat or phone.

How do I verify a provider?

Search your national regulator's register, verify the company details and check the domain age.

Can I get stolen crypto back?

Usually not, because transactions are irreversible. Always report it; exchanges can occasionally freeze funds.
