Metale szlachetne

Investing in copper

Copper is not a precious metal, but it belongs in any serious commodity analysis. It conducts electricity better than any affordable alternative, so it sits in cables, transformers, EVs, heat pumps, wind turbines and data centres.

Dr. Copper as a cycle gauge

Copper has long led the global industrial cycle. That role persists but is blurred: a growing share of demand comes from energy infrastructure funded by multi-year public and grid-operator budgets rather than the construction cycle.

Where demand comes from

A combustion car holds about 20 kg of copper; a battery-electric car two to four times that. Offshore wind uses tonnes per megawatt, and AI data centres require thousands of tonnes for power, cooling and cabling.

Grid reinforcement is the third block: European operators have committed hundreds of billions, with copper the dominant material line item.

Why supply lags

A new mine takes ten to fifteen years from drilling to production. Ore grades keep falling, so the same metal needs more rock, energy and water. Chile and Peru supply about a third of the world, making politics and water scarcity direct price factors.

How to invest

Physical copper is impractical for individuals. The usual routes are a futures-based ETC — where roll costs in contango erode returns — or mining and cable-maker shares, which add operational and political risk but avoid roll drag.

Najczęstsze pytania

Is copper a precious metal?

No, it is an industrial base metal, included here because it shares the same commodity dynamics and investment routes.

What are roll costs?

The loss when an expiring futures contract is replaced by a more expensive one further along the curve.

Does copper hedge inflation?

Partly. It rises with cost inflation but falls hard in recessions, unlike gold.

Miners or an ETC?

Miners give leverage and sometimes dividends with company risk; an ETC tracks price more purely but carries roll costs.
