Staking i dochód

What is staking?

Staking means locking coins as collateral to help secure a proof-of-stake network. You are paid for that, but this is not bank interest: it is a reward from protocol issuance and transaction fees, with risks of its own.

The idea behind proof-of-stake

A blockchain without a central operator has to make attacks expensive. Proof-of-work does that with electricity and machines; proof-of-stake does it with capital: validators post coins as a bond and lose part of it if they cheat or stay offline.

Each round the network randomly picks validators to propose and attest blocks. The more coins staked, the higher the chance of being selected — and the larger the bond at risk.

Where the yield comes from

The return usually has three layers. Issuance: the protocol mints new coins to pay validators. Transaction fees: what users pay to transact. And on networks like Ethereum, the value of blockspace auctions (MEV and tips).

Only the second and third layers are genuine payments from users. The first is dilution: anyone not staking sees their share of the supply fall. That is why a nominal staking yield is not the same as profit.

  • Issuance: new coins, paid by all holders through dilution
  • Transaction fees: real demand for blockspace
  • Tips and MEV: extra payment for ordering and inclusion

Net versus gross: the real return

The number platforms show is almost always gross and denominated in coins. Subtract network inflation, your validator or platform commission and tax, and what remains is the real return.

A network paying 4 percent while issuing 3 percent a year, with a platform taking 15 percent commission, yields very little in real terms. Always work with the real figure, not the banner.

Which networks and which orders of magnitude

Ethereum typically pays a few percent a year depending on how much ether is staked in total. Solana, Cardano, Polkadot, Cosmos and Avalanche show higher nominal rates, but also higher issuance.

A high percentage is not a quality mark. A network paying 20 percent while issuing 18 percent is largely paying you with your own dilution.

Ryzyko

Staking to nie konto oszczędnościowe. Slashing, przestoje walidatora, okresy unbondingu, błędy smart kontraktów w liquid stakingu i spadek kursu mogą zmniejszyć pozycję. Wysoki APR zwykle rekompensuje wysoką inflację lub ryzyko. To nie jest porada inwestycyjna.

Zaokrąglenia i założenia

Zakładamy stały APR, stałą cenę i równe okresy. APY = (1 + APR netto / n)^n − 1. Zysk realny to (1 + APY) / (1 + inflacja) − 1. Kwoty pokazujemy z czterema miejscami (monety) i dwoma (waluta), a obliczenia prowadzimy bez zaokrągleń. Podatki i opłaty nie są uwzględnione.

APY = (1 + APR/n)^n − 1

Najczęstsze pytania

Is staking the same as saving?

No. There is no deposit guarantee, the yield is paid in a volatile asset and you take technical, protocol and counterparty risk. A price drop can easily exceed the yield.

Can I lose coins by staking?

Yes, in two ways. Slashing punishes double signing or serious validator misbehaviour, and a platform or liquid staking token can fail. Correct solo staking with good uptime has a very low slashing risk in practice.

What is the minimum amount?

Solo staking on Ethereum requires 32 ether per validator. Through pools, liquid staking or a platform you can participate with far smaller amounts, at the cost of commission and extra counterparty risk.
