Buying Solana: explained

Solana positions itself as a fast, low-cost alternative to networks like Ethereum. That brings technical advantages, but also a different risk profile: a history of network outages and an architecture geared more toward performance than maximum decentralisation.

What makes Solana different

Solana combines proof-of-stake with an additional mechanism (proof-of-history) that orders transactions without validators constantly needing to communicate about it. This enables high throughput and low transaction costs.

The trade-off is that the network has fully halted several times in the past due to overload or software bugs. That has become less frequent, but it remains a difference from the uptime history of Ethereum or Bitcoin.

Purchase and custody

Buying through a MiCA-licensed provider works the same as with other coins: KYC, deposit and a purchase at a rate with a margin. Solana is widely offered, though the spread can differ between providers compared to bitcoin or ether.

For custody, you need a Solana-compatible wallet; the address format and underlying technology differ from Ethereum, so moving coins between those networks always requires a swap or bridge, never a direct transfer.

  • Low transaction costs make small, frequent purchases relatively cheaper than on Ethereum mainnet
  • Check that your wallet supports Solana addresses before depositing
  • Staking is available through network validators, each with its own commission and exit terms

Staking and ecosystem risk

Solana has an active validator landscape, and staking is often offered directly in wallets. The yield, like other proof-of-stake networks, consists of issuance and transaction fees, and dilutes holders who don't stake.

Solana also has an extensive ecosystem of decentralised applications. Anyone who only buys the base coin and doesn't interact with smart contracts avoids that extra application risk, but it's worth knowing the broader network sees more active use than, say, bitcoin.

Tax basics

The same principles apply as with other coins: in Belgium, the distinction between normal management of private assets and miscellaneous or professional income; in the Netherlands, inclusion in box 3 at the value on the reference date of 1 January. Staking income on Solana, like ethereum, is often assessed separately from sale gains.

Najczęstsze pytania

Why is Solana cheaper to use than Ethereum?

The network processes transactions with a different consensus mechanism that allows higher throughput, so per-transaction costs are typically much lower than on the Ethereum main chain.

Is the outage history a reason to avoid Solana?

That is a personal risk judgement. The historical outages show the network has been more vulnerable to overload than Bitcoin or Ethereum; that weighs in alongside the usual price risks.

Can I send Solana directly to an Ethereum address?

No. The networks are not compatible; a direct transfer between address formats will not work and can result in lost coins. Use a swap or bridge between the networks.
