XRP: the bridge asset explained
XRP is the best known utility coin: designed not as digital savings but as a bridge between currencies and as fuel for the XRP Ledger. The network has run since 2012, uses no mining and settles in seconds — while remaining one of the most debated assets in the sector.
How the ledger settles
The XRP Ledger uses neither proof-of-work nor classic staking. Validators that trust each other confirm a new ledger version every three to five seconds. There is no block reward.
Fees are a fraction of a cent and are burned rather than paid out, so supply shrinks very slowly.
All 100 billion XRP were created at launch; nothing new is minted. Supply enters circulation from an escrow held by Ripple.
The bridge function
Banks normally pre-fund accounts in every currency pair. The XRP idea is to convert into XRP, send in seconds and convert out at the other end.
The ledger also hosts a built-in exchange, stablecoins and tokenised assets.
The honest caveat: dollar stablecoins now handle most cross-border crypto flow, so ledger activity does not automatically mean demand for XRP itself.
Ripple, escrow and the lawsuit
Ripple co-developed the ledger and still holds a large share of XRP in escrow, releasing part of it monthly — the main criticism from sceptics.
The long-running SEC case distinguished institutional sales from exchange trading, after which most US platforms relisted the asset. In Europe XRP is a crypto-asset under MiCA.
Bottom line: less legal fog than a few years ago, but one very visible party in the background.
