What to do after crypto fraud

Speed and documentation determine what is still possible. This is not legal advice, but it is the order that maximises the chance of a usable case file.

Step 1: stop the damage

Cut contact. Move remaining funds to a new wallet with a new seed phrase, not a new address in the same compromised wallet.

Revoke approvals and change passwords and two-factor settings, starting with your email.

Step 2: document everything

Collect transaction hashes, addresses, screenshots, phone numbers, domains and amounts with timestamps.

Put it in one chronological document; police and regulators ask for exactly this.

  • Transaction hashes and receiving addresses
  • Chronology with date, time and amount
  • All communication as screenshots

Step 3: report

File a police report and notify your national regulator so the party can be listed as a warning.

If money moved by bank transfer, notify your bank immediately; very recent transfers can sometimes be recalled.

Step 4: beware recovery fraud

Victim lists are resold. Within weeks 'recovery experts' will offer to retrieve funds for an upfront fee. That is a second fraud.

No service can guarantee recovery of stolen crypto against prepayment.

Ofte stilte spørsmål

Can the police recover my crypto?

Sometimes, if funds reach a regulated exchange and action is fast. Reporting is necessary regardless.

Should I report small amounts?

Yes. Reports drive investigations and warnings; small amounts often add up to large cases.

Can my bank reverse the payment?

A recent SEPA transfer can sometimes be recalled; a crypto transaction cannot be reversed.
