The digital euro, dissected

What the ECB is actually building, what the legislation fixes in law, and what it means for your bank account, your privacy and the crypto market

  • The digital euro is a claim on the ECB, not a bank deposit and not an investment: it bears no interest and carries no price risk.
  • The holding limit plus the waterfall mechanism are the heart of the design; without them a bank run could unfold digitally within hours.
  • Offline payment is the only component with a privacy level the ECB compares to cash; online payment explicitly is not.
  • Basic use must be free for individuals; merchants pay a fee for which the regulation foresees a cap.

What spot ETFs did to the bitcoin market

Liquidity, volatility and who is actually buying since regulated funds stepped in

  • Order-book depth around the mid price clearly increased during US trading hours.
  • Volatility concentrates more strongly around the US market open and close.
  • Correlation with broad equity indices is structurally higher than in the preceding period.
  • Weekend trading became relatively thinner: large parties trade when their infrastructure is open.

Self-custody in practice

What goes wrong for retail holders managing their own keys, and which setup prevents it

  • Seven of ten documented losses stem from backup failures, not attacks.
  • Those who test their recovery procedure once almost never lose access in our dataset.
  • Storing a recovery phrase digitally, including in a password manager, is the biggest risk factor in theft cases.
  • In half of the death cases, heirs could not access the assets because no instructions existed.

European banks and crypto: from refusal to custody

How large banks in the Benelux, Germany and Scandinavia shifted their stance on crypto-assets

  • Nearly all banks studied allow payments to licensed platforms, but half still apply informal limits or extra questions.
  • Custody services for institutional clients are growing faster than retail offerings.
  • The difference between banks is larger than the difference between countries.
  • Recurring payments to the same licensed counterparty rarely trigger blocks; one-off large amounts still do.

MiCA, one year on

What the European crypto regulation actually changed for users, issuers and banks

  • Consolidation is the clearest effect: small providers without the capital for a licence disappeared or were acquired.
  • Euro stablecoins gained share within the EU but remain marginal globally against dollar tokens.
  • Passporting works, but national supervisors interpret advertising rules and complaint handling differently.
  • Segregation of client assets is the most concrete gain for users; there is no guarantee fund.

The real cost of buying crypto in the Benelux

Fees, spreads and hidden costs at eight platforms used by Belgian and Dutch retail investors

  • The gap between the cheapest and most expensive route is roughly twenty euro on 1,000 euro, or 2% of the amount invested.
  • At six of eight platforms the spread exceeds the visible fee for amounts below 250 euro.
  • The pro interface of the same platform is on average 78% cheaper than the simple buy button.
  • Withdrawal fees to a self-custody wallet range from zero to five euro and weigh heavily on monthly buys under 100 euro.
