Bitvavo explained
Bitvavo is one of the most used crypto platforms in the Netherlands and Belgium, with iDEAL and Bancontact as trusted deposit methods. That makes the entry low-threshold, but it remains a different kind of service than a bank account.
What Bitvavo offers
Bitvavo is a crypto platform: you buy and sell coins directly, unlike a tracker that only follows the price. The platform operates under a MiCA licence via the Dutch supervisors, bringing licensing, custody and transparency obligations.
Alongside trading, the platform typically offers staking for part of the coins and an annual tax statement, simplifying yearly administration.
Custody: at the platform until you withdraw
As long as your coins sit in your Bitvavo account, the platform holds them for you, comparable to a third-party account. You can trade, but the platform manages the underlying keys.
Withdrawing to your own wallet is possible and only then gives you full control over the coins, including the risk and responsibility that comes with it: losing your own key is irreversible.
MiCA licence: what it does and doesn't guarantee
A MiCA licence means the platform meets European requirements around capital, segregation of client assets from own funds, and a complaints procedure. It's not a guarantee against price loss, nor a deposit guarantee like a bank account.
If in doubt, check the current licence status via the supervisor's public register, since licences and entities can change.
Where costs are visible and invisible
Bitvavo charges a stated fee per order that drops at higher trading volume. On top of that fee there's usually a small spread that's less noticeable than the percentage on the fee page.
For small, occasional purchases through the simple buy button, that spread weighs relatively heavier than for larger orders through the advanced interface.
Tax filing and administration
The annual statement the platform provides is a good starting point for filing, but doesn't replace your own records: anyone who transferred to their own wallet or switched platforms in between needs to add that themselves.
Keep exports separate from the platform itself, since an account closure or technical change can complicate access to historical data.
Ofte stilte spørsmål
Is my money at Bitvavo as safe as at a bank?
No, it's a different form of supervision. A MiCA licence sets requirements for custody and transparency, but offers no deposit guarantee like bank savings.
Can I withdraw my coins from Bitvavo to my own wallet?
Yes, that's a core feature of a crypto platform. Only after withdrawal do you have full control over the key, with the associated risk if you lose it.
Why is the fee on a small purchase relatively high?
Besides the stated fee, a spread plays a role that weighs relatively heavier on small, occasional orders through the simple buy button.
Is Bitvavo's annual statement enough for my tax return?
It's a good starting point, but transferring to your own wallet or using multiple platforms requires your own additional records.
