The foundry model

Customers bring the design, TSMC manufactures. Because it scales leading-edge processes fastest, nearly every top chip comes from here.

Advanced packaging matters as much as wafers: combining compute and memory in one package now sets the wait time for AI hardware.

Geopolitics

Concentration in Taiwan is the single biggest systemic risk in the AI chain. New fabs in the US, Japan and Germany spread it, but take years and cost more.

Export rules also decide which chips may go where, reshaping the customer base faster than technology does.

Risks

Cyclical customer investment, heavy capital spending and political tension around Taiwan.

Ofte stilte spørsmål

Why is TSMC hard to replace?

Leading-edge manufacturing needs years of experience, extremely expensive machines and high yields.

What is packaging capacity?

Combining compute and memory into one package, often the bottleneck for AI hardware.

How do Europeans buy TSMC?

Usually through an ADR listing or a broad semiconductor ETF. Mind withholding tax and currency risk.
