What the company does

Microsoft sells enterprise software (Microsoft 365, Windows, Dynamics), cloud capacity through Azure, developer tools through GitHub and games through Xbox.

AI mainly shows up as subscriptions layered on existing licences, plus compute customers buy on Azure.

Azure and the AI bill

AI demand lands in Azure revenue, but costs money first: data centres, chips and power. Investors watch capital spending as closely as growth.

The OpenAI partnership gave Microsoft a head start in models, while creating dependence on one partner and on AI services turning profitable.

Why banks and crypto care

Banks increasingly run core processes in public cloud. European supervisors flag concentration risk: one outage hits the whole sector.

Tokenisation projects and bank custody services often run on Azure or rival clouds, and DORA makes that dependency formally testable.

Ofte stilte spørsmål

Is Microsoft already earning from AI?

Partly. Compute converts into revenue immediately; assistants grow gradually while investment runs ahead of returns.

What does the OpenAI relationship mean?

Microsoft supplies compute and resells models. It is an advantage and a dependency regulators are watching.

Why is Microsoft relevant to finance?

Because much of banking infrastructure now runs on public cloud, creating concentration risk.
