Amazon (AMZN)

Amazon looks like a shop, but profit comes mainly from AWS and advertising. In AI it is both a buyer and a builder of infrastructure.

Where the profit is

Retail delivers huge revenue on thin margins. AWS is a fraction of sales but most of operating income.

Advertising on Amazon's own marketplace is the fastest-growing profit line.

AI strategy

AWS rents compute and develops in-house training and inference chips to cut cost and dependence on Nvidia.

Amazon also invests in model builders and offers customers a choice of models rather than one house brand.

What to track

AWS growth, data-centre capital spending and retail margin. Energy contracts for data centres are becoming a factor too.

Ofte stilte spørsmål

Is Amazon an AI company?

Mostly an infrastructure company: it rents the compute others build AI on, with its own chips as a cost edge.

Why does AWS matter so much?

It provides most operating profit and helps fund AI investment.

What pressures margins?

Delivery, wages and heavy investment in data centres and power.
