Crypto ETFs & ETPs
Crypto ETPs in Europe: what you buy and from whom
European investors buying crypto exposure on exchange almost always use ETPs or ETNs. They behave like an ETF in practice but differ fundamentally in legal structure.
- Ticker
- Diverse (Xetra, SIX, Euronext)
- ISIN
- Per product verschillend
- Issuer
- 21Shares, VanEck, Bitwise, WisdomTree e.a.
- Ongoing charges
- ±0,20%–2,50% per jaar
- Structure
- Physically backed ETP/ETN or basket product, not UCITS
Figures are indicative and checked periodically. Always verify the ISIN, ongoing charges and index in the issuer's latest KID and factsheet before you invest.
ETP, ETN, ETC: same idea, different label
All three are exchange-listed debt instruments tracking an underlying. For crypto the usual term is ETP or ETN. The critical question is not the label but the backing: is crypto actually held one-to-one with a custodian, or is it an unsecured promise from the issuer?
Physically backed products usually publish addresses or a custodian attestation. Unbacked or synthetic products add issuer credit risk.
- Check whether it is physically backed or synthetic
- Identify the custodian and any independent trustee
- Confirm there is an EU prospectus
Single asset or basket
Beyond bitcoin and ethereum ETPs there are baskets combining the largest assets, sometimes with periodic rebalancing. A basket reduces single-asset risk, but market-cap weighting still leaves a heavy bitcoin and ethereum share.
Staking ETPs pass through part of the network rewards. Check the net pass-through after fees and the slashing and lock-up risk.
Costs and spread
Annual fees vary widely, from around 0.20% on the largest bitcoin products to over 2% on niche baskets. On top comes the exchange spread, which can widen considerably outside peak hours for thinly traded ETPs.
Always compare total annual cost with the alternative: buying directly and self-custodying, or using a regulated trading venue.
- Fees differ by a factor of ten between products
- Spread matters for small, frequent purchases
- Trade during core European hours
Tax and practicalities
An ETP sits in your brokerage account and appears in the usual annual statements, which simplifies administration versus on-chain positions. Tax treatment differs per country: in the Netherlands it typically falls under box 3; in Belgium the nature of management and transaction taxes matter.
Consult a tax adviser for your situation; product structure can affect treatment.
Vanliga frågor
Are crypto ETPs safe?
They remove self-custody risk but add custodian and issuer risk. Physical backing and an independent trustee are the key checks.
Why is there no crypto UCITS ETF?
UCITS requires diversification and does not permit direct crypto exposure, so issuers use the ETP structure.
Can I redeem the coins?
A few products allow delivery in theory, but it is rarely available to retail investors.
Basket or single asset?
A basket spreads across coins but, due to market-cap weighting, usually remains bitcoin and ethereum driven.
