POL: price and mechanics

POL is the successor to MATIC, Polygon's original token. The network started as a cheap sidechain next to Ethereum and is expanding into a network of interconnected chains meant to be secured by the same token.

From MATIC to POL

Polygon started as Matic Network, with MATIC paying transaction fees on a sidechain next to Ethereum. That sidechain offered much lower costs than Ethereum itself, under a somewhat different security model with its own validator set.

With the announcement of Polygon 2.0, the project introduced POL as MATIC's successor, meant as the shared token for a whole network of interconnected chains rather than a single sidechain. Existing MATIC tokens could be migrated to POL.

POL is designed to reward validators for securing multiple chains at once, rather than just one network, giving the token a broader role than MATIC originally had.

  • MATIC has been replaced by POL through a migration
  • POL is meant to secure multiple Polygon chains at once
  • Validators can work across multiple chains with one token

What Polygon covers today

Alongside the original sidechain, now called Polygon PoS, the project is also developing Layer 2 technology based on zero-knowledge proofs, designed to bundle transactions and write them back to Ethereum compactly and verifiably.

These different components are meant to eventually form a network of chains that can exchange value and messages, with POL as the shared security layer and fee currency.

Polygon has partnered with major brands on NFT and loyalty projects over the years, raising awareness beyond crypto's core audience, though that doesn't automatically translate into lasting on-chain usage.

Risks of the transition

Moving from MATIC to POL carries execution risk: holders who don't migrate remain stuck with the old token while the new ecosystem is built around POL. Always check whether migration is automatic on your exchange or wallet.

The broader plan of an interconnected network of chains is technically ambitious and still in development; delays or slower adoption of the new Layer 2 technology could limit POL's expected upside.

Polygon PoS itself has a smaller validator set than the largest networks, making it more sensitive to coordination issues than, for instance, Ethereum.

Ofte stilte spørsmål

Is MATIC the same as POL?

POL is MATIC's successor. Existing MATIC tokens could be migrated to POL.

Why was MATIC replaced?

To have one shared token that can secure multiple interconnected Polygon chains, rather than a single sidechain.

What is Polygon PoS?

The original Polygon sidechain next to Ethereum, offering lower costs via its own validator set.

Is switching to POL mandatory?

Advisable for using the new ecosystem. Old MATIC remains valid until migrated.
