Interview

On-chain data as an early warning for manipulation

Blockchains are public, which makes certain forms of market manipulation more visible than in traditional markets. We spoke with Otto Reims, data analyst at a European market integrity research firm, about what on-chain data reveals.

What kind of patterns are you looking for exactly?

Reims: 'We look at, among other things, wallet clusters that buy or sell in a coordinated way around the same times, sudden concentration of tokens in a small number of addresses ahead of price moves, and suspicious patterns between exchange wallets that may indicate wash trading.'

'What's special about blockchains is that transactions are permanent and public. That makes it possible to reconstruct patterns years later that on traditional exchanges are often only visible to the regulator itself, with delay.'

Can you give an example without naming names?

Reims: 'We've seen a case where a small number of wallets bought up a large share of an obscure token's circulating supply within a few hours, followed by a wave of small transactions meant to create the impression of broad interest. A sharp price increase followed shortly after, and those same wallets then sold their position.'

'Such patterns aren't conclusive proof on their own, but they are a strong signal that warrants further investigation, especially combined with off-chain signals such as suspicious social media campaigns.'

  • Coordinated wallet activity
  • Sudden token concentration
  • Wash trading between linked addresses
  • Timing around price movements

How does on-chain analysis relate to regulatory oversight?

Reims: 'On-chain analysis is a complement to, not a replacement for, formal oversight. We can flag patterns, but it's up to regulators and sometimes enforcement agencies to establish whether manipulation actually occurred and to act on it legally.'

'Under MiCA, European regulators now have more explicit powers to tackle market abuse in crypto assets, similar to existing rules for equity markets. That makes our signals more actionable than a few years ago.'

What can retail investors do with this?

Reims: 'On-chain data is partly freely accessible via blockchain explorers and dashboards. Anyone who sees a strong price move in a small token can check for themselves whether it coincides with notable wallet activity. That's no guarantee against loss, but it can help you be extra cautious.'

'It's important not to rely on a single signal. Always combine on-chain signals with other information, such as the project's reputation and liquidity across different platforms.'

A sober caveat

On-chain analysis reduces information asymmetry, but it doesn't eliminate the risk of loss. Small and illiquid tokens remain particularly vulnerable to manipulation, with or without prior warning signals.

This interview is intended for education about market analysis and does not constitute investment advice or a recommendation to trade specific tokens.

Vanliga frågor

What is on-chain analysis?

Studying public transaction data on a blockchain to detect patterns such as coordinated trading or suspicious token concentration.

Can on-chain data prove manipulation with certainty?

No, according to this analyst it provides strong signals that warrant further investigation, but it's up to regulators to formally establish manipulation.

Does MiCA help tackle market manipulation?

MiCA gives European regulators more explicit powers to address market abuse in crypto assets, similar to rules in equity markets.

Can retail investors access on-chain data themselves?

Yes, via public blockchain explorers and dashboards, though good interpretation takes some experience and additional context.
