USD1: price, issuer and mechanics.

World Liberty Financial is a decentralized finance project launched in 2024 with members of the Trump family involved as advisors and stakeholders. USD1 is that project's stablecoin product, issued to make dollar reserves digitally tradable.

The issuer presents USD1 as fully backed by cash, short-term US treasuries and dollar equivalents held with external custodians. As with other reserve stablecoins, trust depends on the quality and frequency of reserve reporting.

The political connection makes USD1 an unusual case in the stablecoin market: the token was used in some large crypto-related investment transactions by foreign parties, raising questions about conflicts of interest between public office and private business interests.

USD1 is, according to the issuer, backed one to one by cash and short-term US treasuries held with regulated custodians. The structure resembles that of other major dollar stablecoins like USDT and USDC.

The difference lies in the degree of independent verification: established issuers regularly publish attestations by external accountants. With USD1, users need to judge for themselves how complete and frequent that reporting is, given the project's shorter track record.

As long as reserves are real and liquid, the peg functions like comparable stablecoins: arbitrage between the market and the redemption window keeps the price near one dollar.

The most discussed risk with USD1 is not technical but political: the involvement of a sitting or former government official in a commercial stablecoin project raises questions about independent oversight and possible favoritism.

Under MiCA, such a dollar stablecoin would need an e-money token issuer license to be freely offered in the EU; without that license, availability on European platforms may remain limited.

For users, the same basic risks apply as with other reserve stablecoins: counterparty risk at custodians, dependence on the accuracy of published reserves, and the risk that regulators may act more strictly in future against politically entangled issuers.
