GOOGL

Alphabet (GOOGL)

Alphabet is Google's parent. Advertising pays the bills, while AI is both the biggest opportunity and the biggest threat to that model.

What the company does

Revenue comes from search ads, YouTube, Google Cloud and subscriptions, alongside bets on autonomous driving and health tech.

In AI, Google builds both the models (Gemini) and the chips they run on (TPUs), a combination few rivals match.

The tension in the model

Answers shown directly in search results can reduce clicks to websites, hitting publishers and Google's own ad model.

At the same time, in-house silicon lowers the cost of each AI-assisted query and protects margins.

Regulation and litigation

Competition cases in the US and Europe over search and ad technology have run for years, and outcomes may force conduct rules or divestitures.

For media companies that is immediate: the rules decide how traffic and ad money are shared.

Vanliga frågor

Why does Google build its own chips?

To reduce dependence on Nvidia and cut the cost of each AI request. TPUs are tuned for Google's own models.

Does AI threaten search?

It changes it. Fewer clicks per query can pressure ad revenue unless ads inside AI answers make up the gap.

What is the biggest risk?

Regulation. Competition cases could force structural change in the advertising business.
