Emerging markets ETF: some 3,000 companies outside the rich world

Emerging markets deliver the growth developed markets often lack, but they deliver it unevenly. A broad EM ETF spreads across dozens of countries and thousands of companies, from Taiwanese chipmakers to Indian banks.

What is inside

The IMI variant adds small caps to large and mid caps, taking you towards 3,000 holdings. Country weights are far from even: China, Taiwan, India and South Korea usually make up the bulk.

  • Around 3,000 companies across 20+ countries
  • Heavy concentration in Asia
  • Sector tilt: semiconductors, banks, consumer

Risks a world index does not carry

Currency risk is sharper, and political risk ranges from capital controls to sudden sector regulation. Governance standards and minority shareholder protection differ by market.

Combining with a world ETF

MSCI World holds no emerging markets. Combine World with EM at roughly ACWI weights, or buy a single ACWI or FTSE All-World tracker.
