BNB: price and mechanics

BNB started in 2017 as a fee-discount token on the Binance exchange and grew into the native currency of its own blockchain, BNB Chain. It is used for lower trading fees, paying transaction costs on-chain, and participating in projects built on that network.

From discount token to its own chain

BNB launched via an ICO on Ethereum, primarily offering discounted Binance trading fees. In 2019 Binance launched its own blockchain, later merged into BNB Chain, with BNB as the native gas token for transactions.

That gave BNB a second function beyond the exchange: paying for compute on a network with its own smart contracts, DeFi protocols and games. BNB Chain runs on a limited validator set closely tied to Binance, which makes it fast and cheap but less decentralised than Ethereum or Bitcoin.

Coin burns and supply

Binance periodically destroys part of the BNB supply, aiming to reduce total supply toward a pre-announced cap. Burn size depends on trading volume and on-chain activity in the preceding period.

Burns are often cited as a value-support argument, but they only affect supply: reducing supply pushes price up only if demand stays flat or rises. Treat burns as supply policy, not a guarantee of gains.

Risks of an exchange token

BNB is closely tied to Binance as a company. Regulatory trouble, sanctions or a loss of trust in the exchange can directly affect BNB's price, regardless of BNB Chain's technical state.

Binance has faced investigations and fines in several countries over anti-money-laundering compliance, which tends to affect both the company and its token together.

BNB Chain is also less decentralised than larger networks, making it more sensitive to decisions by a small group of validators.
