Rules

Travel rule

The obligation to transmit sender and beneficiary data alongside a crypto transfer.

Explanation

In the EU it applies from the first euro. That is why a platform often asks who owns the destination address when you withdraw.

01

Data that travels along

When funds move between service providers, the name, address or date of birth and account details of sender and recipient must accompany the transfer. In the EU the transfer-of-funds regulation applies this to every amount, with no threshold — a stricter application than the international standard.

02

Self-hosted wallets

If you send to your own hardware wallet, the exchange will ask you to confirm it: sometimes with a signature from the wallet, sometimes with a screenshot or statement. For larger amounts to an unverified address extra checks may follow. It is inconvenient but not a ban: self-custody remains permitted.

Key takeaways

  • No minimum threshold in the EU.
  • Verifying your own addresses in advance saves time.
  • Self-custody remains allowed.
