Ethereum typically processes transactions sequentially, limiting throughput. Monad aims to speed this up through techniques like parallel execution, processing transactions that don't affect each other simultaneously rather than one by one.
The network is EVM-compatible, meaning existing Ethereum applications can be ported to Monad with relatively few changes. That lowers the barrier for developers to switch or operate on multiple networks at once.
The goal is a network that combines Ethereum's usability and ecosystem with throughput closer to specialised, less decentralised chains.

What MON is used for
MON is used to pay network transaction fees and to stake with the validators securing the chain through proof-of-stake. Holders who stake risk having part of their stake slashed if the validator they choose misbehaves.
As a relatively new network, Monad still needs to prove its security and decentralisation under real, sustained load. Test-environment performance doesn't guarantee the same result under large-scale, uncontrolled usage.
MON's eventual value depends heavily on whether developers and users actually migrate from existing networks, which isn't a given given strong competition from established Layer 1s and Layer 2s.
Risks of a young network
New Layer 1 networks compete with many established alternatives for the same developers, users and liquidity. Without demonstrably durable adoption, the native token's value remains largely speculative.
Technical claims about speed and throughput need to be proven under peak load in practice; networks that perform well in benchmarks sometimes still hit issues once real users and attackers get involved.
As with all new proof-of-stake networks, there's a period where the validator set is still limited and less distributed, making the network more sensitive to coordination or outages than longer-established chains.
