Basics

Wallet

Software or hardware that stores your private keys and signs transactions.

Explanation

A wallet does not hold coins: those live on the blockchain. It holds the proof that you may spend them. Lose the key or seed phrase and no support desk can restore access.

01

What a wallet actually stores

Your coins always live on the blockchain, never in your wallet. What the wallet stores is a private key: a secret number proving you control a given address. Sending a transaction means using that key to place a digital signature the rest of the network can verify without ever seeing the key.

02

Types of wallets

A hot wallet sits on your phone or computer and is connected to the internet: handy for small amounts and daily use. A hardware wallet keeps the key on a separate device that never goes online; you confirm every transaction physically on the device. A custodial wallet is not really a wallet: there an exchange holds the keys and you merely hold a claim on that company.

The rule of thumb that prevents most misery: anything you do not need within a week does not belong in a hot wallet or on an exchange.

03

What goes wrong

The three classic mistakes: storing the seed phrase digitally (photo, cloud note, email to yourself), installing a wallet from an ad link instead of the official site, and believing a 'support' agent who asks you to confirm your words. In all three cases the money is gone for good — no chargeback, no bank, no insurance.

Key takeaways

  • Keys, not coins: the wallet stores proof.
  • Large amounts on hardware, small ones on your phone.
  • Nobody may ever see your seed phrase.

Frequently asked questions

+What if my phone breaks?

With your seed phrase you can restore the wallet on any other device. Without those words, a broken phone equals a lost wallet.

+Do I need multiple wallets?

Often yes: one for long-term holdings you rarely touch, and one 'working wallet' with a small balance for experimenting. That way a mistake never costs you everything.
