Liquidity

How far you can buy or sell a position without moving the price much.

Explanation

Liquidity is not a property of a coin but of a market at a moment. The same coin can be deep during the day and thin at night, making the same order far more expensive.

01

What liquidity means in practice

Liquidity is the ease with which you can buy or sell without moving the price. A market is liquid when large quantities sit on both sides of the order book at all times. In an illiquid market a single order of a few thousand euros can already move the price by percent — and that works against you, both entering and exiting.

Volume is not the same as liquidity. A coin can show high daily volume from bots trading back and forth while the order book stays thin the moment you actually need to move size. So look at depth within one and two percent of the mid price, not only at daily volume.

02

Why it affects your return

Liquidity determines your actual entry and exit price, and therefore your return. It also disappears exactly when you need it: in a panic market makers pull their orders, spreads widen and prices gap. That is why small coins fall far harder than bitcoin in a crash, even when nothing fundamental has changed.

Key takeaways

  • Look at depth, not just daily volume.
  • Liquidity vanishes during panic.
  • Test with a small order before trading large.

Frequently asked questions

+How do I test a coin's liquidity?

Inspect the order book and add up what is offered within one percent of the price. Also place a small test order and compare the execution price with the quoted price.
